The World’s Changing, and Your Role in It

“I will do the best I can.” – Wangari Maathai, Story of the Hummingbird

The topic of the Power of One has been popping up everywhere in my life lately.  I’ve seen it in documentaries, discussed it in social psychology class, witnessed it in my own and my friends’ lives, and learned about it in the books I’m reading.  I think people often forget – or are never even told – about the power and effect that each individual person has on the world; however, society – this thing we often see ourselves as having no control over – is simply made up of people, their beliefs, and their individual actions, much like the ocean is made up of tiny drops of water.

In the documentary I Am, Desmond Tutu puts it this way: “[You may think] you can’t do anything about global poverty, but yes, you can! You can do something about this guy.”  And that guy.  And the woman over there.  Small actions such as these can combine to manifest huge changes in the world, which brings me to my next point:  the world is changing, and for the better.  I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I don’t believe I’ve ever seen it quite so plainly as I’m seeing it recently.

Towards the beginning of the summer, there were a good three months where I was experiencing pretty intense episodes – for lack of a better term – of depression over the seemingly overwhelming ‘thing’ that is society and the direction it so often seemed to be headed.  I’ve realized, though, that there is a counter-movement.  There’s now a steady stream of people that are walking the opposite way, away from the cliff that is society’s doom, and the numbers are growing every day.  I know this.  And I want you to know it, too, so I decided to share with you some examples I’ve seen of how the world is changing for the good of all of us (I realize all people might not agree with all of these, they are simply my opinion). (;

– I see higher degrees of socio-political awareness in everybody.  Younger people are following world events; traditionally “conservative” people are opening up on issues like marriage equality, medical marijuana, and environmental destruction; “traditional” businesses are trying to appeal to people like you and me, and more and more people are in favor of peace over war, which prefaces the next point:

– The people of the world essentially halted what could have been a huge mess in Syria. President Obama was more than ready for a military strike, but between other countries and American citizens opposing the action, he decided that it “might not be a good idea.”

– Through my social media accounts, I’m seeing more and more of my friends “awakening” to idea that the world needs to change, and that we have to do it ourselves.  They are using their own accounts to spread the message.

–  There are a growing number of – in my opinion – high-profile “world-changing organizations.”  A few examples: Non-GMO Project, TED, NORML, and Food Not Bombs.

– There’s increasing access to free, online, college education on sites like Coursera, OnlineCourses, and MIT OpenCourseWare.

– We’ve witnessed the first ever legalization of cannabis/hemp in two American states, and half of the United States have legalized medical marijuana (and many are working to follow suit).

– Europe is taking large strides in terms of Energy and is doing so successfully – i.e. German Solar Power, Biking in Amsterdam, Affordable Travel via Eurail, Waste-to-Energy programs, etc.

– There’s an ever-growing amount of social and psychological research in: consciousness, empathy, violence and crime, groupthink, sociological interactions, etc.

– A rising number of people have a decent understanding of human environmental impacts, and there’s an increasing public will to change things (slowly, but surely.)

– And of course, there are many, many more which I cannot list for the sake of brevity (and this list is already quite long!).

I hope this helps you see, even a little, how things seriously are getting better.  Whenever our society’s obstacles seem insurmountable, think about all the similar problems we have overcame as species in the past: slavery, apartheid, equal rights, monarchies and dictatorships, corruption… sure, some of these problems still linger, but we humans are certainly better off than we have been in years before. Not to mention, we now have the internet to enhance our efforts! I’m confident that we’ll continue on this track of progress if we do not give up hope on the many projects and policies we are collectively pursuing.  (:

the Matrix.

When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it – always.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Everywhere I look I see lies.

I see magazines lying to little kids about what Real Men and Women Are.  I see the News media lying to middle-class white people about what’s going on in the world.  I see grown adults lying to little children about everything you can imagine.

I see lies about the government.  Lies about terrorism.   Lies about food, drugs and alcohol.  Lies about Muslims.  Lies about Japan.  Lies about Marijuana.

There are lies about money.  Lies about where our money comes from.  Lies about the economy.  Lies about religion, and lies about atheism.  Lies about the Left, and lies about the Right; lies about extremists, anarchists, libertarians, independents and I-don’t-give-a-fxcks.

There are lies about oil.  Lies about the environment.  And lies about the weather.  Lies about technology, and lies about nature.  Lies about animals.  Lies about knowledge.  And intelligence.  And lies like “everybody’s stupid.”

There are lies about gender roles, and lies about sexuality.  There are lies about What Matters, and lies about Love.  There are lies about human nature.  Lies about beauty and peace and satisfaction and happiness; lies about mental illness and lies about sanity.  Lies about what is normal.  Lies about consciousness.  Lies about what we are capable of and what we aren’t capable of.

It’s all lies, and it’s all a distraction.  YOU are the author of your story.  You ARE in charge of your life.  You CAN do great, amazing things – if only you set your mind to it.

You can change the World.  YOU can CHANGE the WORLD.  Most people don’t want to accept this, because that would mean they’d actually have to do something.  It means breaking free of the matrix that has been set up to keep our minds imprisoned, and we’ve gotten pretty comfortable there.

But I promise you the TRUTH is so much more exciting, intriguing, and satisfying than anything could be over in that comfort zone of lies.  Our hearts are longing for truth, and once they catch a glimpse of it, the game is over.  The matrix will no longer satisfy.

People are desperate for something more Real than this materialistic existence we’ve somehow confused with Life.  Don’t let the lies fool you!  We aren’t all happy consumers, and we’re beginning to see that we have the power to change things.  The house of lies is crumbling, and things are changing.

Ignorance won’t always be bliss.  All these lies won’t always be “Truth.”

We are learning.  We are opening our eyes.

There’s a reason I put this in the title of my page — we are Evolving. (;

Change is Coming.

So, tonight I’ve decided to share with you just a little bit about me, personally – why I think the way I do, what I’d like to see in the world and what I am seeing.

When I first began “waking up,” as I call it – my enlightening moment while watching The Union: The business behind getting High, where I realized that if I had been lied to about this one thing (marijuana) my entire life, I was lied to about other things.  By the government.  By my school.  By my religion which extended to almost everyone I knew.  By TV and by non-profit organizations.

Anyway, when I first started looking into all of these things, I pretty much had nobody around to talk to about it other than my boyfriend.  The general consensus around me seemed to be that anybody who thought the government or media would ever lie to us was crazy.  Since then, I’ve seen almost a complete one-eighty in the American population.  Almost.  There are still a good number of people who have complete faith that the government and the mass news-media have honorable intentions, but I see them as a shrinking minority.  There are people everywhere that I can talk to about these things.

I say that to say that things are changing.  Right now.  More and more people are starting to notice the systems of control that are in place to keep us complacent – and all of their flaws.  The next ten years is going to prove a very eventful time for humanity.  Not only are we evolving mentally, with more people embracing logic as the backbone of their beliefs, but we’re also growing exponentially in the technological area – the internet is going to gain some billions of voices over the next few years as access to it expands!  We’re also growing in our capacity to empathize with and love others.  Sometimes, people disappoint me and I fail to see this as true for a time, but looking over longer time spans, it is clear to me that people are becoming more accepting of others, in general.  It’s a wonderful thing.

The world’s going to be a completely different place soon.  As I said in this post, I am extremely excited to be living in the time that I am.  I really hope that we all get to watch the world become a better place, and not worse.  Seeing all the revolutions occurring around the world has made me much more hopeful about that idea.  People are changing.

Imagine if it was everyone’s goal to leave the world in a better state than when we arrived.  The idea of what that would look like has convinced me to make it my goal.  Feel free to make it yours, too.  It’s how real change starts.

Much Love,
